Author Search
To find works by a particular author, the general rule is to type the author’s last name first and then as much of the first name as is known. For example:
An exception to this is made when the author is a saint or other person who is best known by their first name. For example:
- Thomas, Aquinas, Saint
- Augustine, Saint
- Teresa, Mother
- Benedict XVI, Pope
The works of composers and artists are also searched for by Author. For example:
- Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus
- Michelangelo Buonarotti
An Author search is done to find the works of a group, organization, or government agency. For example:
- Catholic Church. Archdiocese of Philadelphia
- Catholic Church. United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
- Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary
- United States. Bureau of the Census
Title Search
To search for an exact title, enter the title without the article. (Omit a, an, the, etc. that are at the beginning of the title.) For example:
- Midsummer Night’s Dream
- Essay on Man
- Story of a Soul
Subject Search
A Subject search will locate materials about a topic or person. Subject searches must use terms found in the Library of Congress Subject Headings. For example:
- Priesthood--Vocation
- Catholic Church Liturgy Texts
- Bible. N.T. John. Commentaries.
Keyword Search
A Keyword search will locate any record containing the typed terms. Note the use of the + sign to refine the search. For example:
This search will yield all items that have keyword Sermon, every item that has the keyword Mount, and every item that has both Sermon Mount as keywords:
This search will yield just the cataloged items that have both Sermon and Mount as keywords:
