7.0 Objectives

  • Understand how to find out what items the library owns by using a variety of searches: author, title, keyword
  • Understand how to read a record in the online catalog

7.1 Search Items

These are the kinds of items you can find by using the online catalog:

  • Books (including electronic books)
  • Journals, magazines and newspapers (periodicals)
  • Audio and video recordings (including CDs & DVDs)
  • Music scores
  • Government publications, microforms
  • Maps, atlases and archives

You won't find individual articles in the online catalog. Where are they? Check out the Find Articles tutorial to learn more about how to find them.

7.2 Tutorial

This movie about searching the online catalog outlines three basic search types:

title, author and keyword

Watch all three parts or choose the one you’d like to focus on. Repeat as often as you’d like. There is also a brief segment on understanding the screen display for an item in the online catalog.
