In late June, it was announced from the Vatican that Pope Francis had appointed Reverend Monsignor Alfred A. Schlert, as the 5th Bishop of the Diocese of Allentown. Earlier today, Bishop Schlert was ordained to the episcopacy at the Cathedral of Saint Catharine of Siena in Allentown. Archbishop Chaput served as the Principal Ordaining Bishop and was also the homilist. You can read Archbishop Chaput’s homily HERE.
Bishop Schlert is a native son of Allentown, who began his formation for the priesthood here at Saint Charles in 1979, before transferring to St. John Lateran University in Rome. He was ordained by the late Bishop Thomas Welsh in 1987. Congratulations and many blessings to Bishop Schlert! Please join us in praying for him and the Diocese of Allentown.
