The Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s Office for Communications shares the information below on behalf of Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.
Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary is pleased to announce a generous anonymous gift of $1 million in support of the Seminary’s endowment, strengthening its mission of forming future priests and leaders for the Church. The gift includes two significant naming opportunities that will enhance the spiritual life of the Seminary community.
A portion of the gift, $250,000, has been designated to name the private chapel in Drexel Hall as the Saint John Vianney Chapel, honoring the patron saint of parish priests and a model of pastoral holiness. The remaining $750,000 will name the Seminary’s main courtyard the Our Lady of Angels Courtyard, creating a prominent, welcoming and prayerful campus space dedicated to the Blessed Mother.
The donors, who have chosen to remain anonymous, said their generosity reflects a legacy passed down through their parents: “Those who have been blessed should share their blessings with the world.”
At the donors’ request, Saint Charles was honored to welcome many members of the Sisters of Saint Francis of Philadelphia community to the naming ceremony. The Sisters’ college, established in 1965, was originally named Our Lady of Angels, making their presence especially meaningful for the dedication of the courtyard.
Sister Kathy Dougherty, O.S.F., reflected on the significance of the gift, saying:
“A gift like this brings so much hope to us all. There is so much suffering in the world, and we are lucky to have the Blessed Mother to lean on in times of darkness. I am thrilled that our seminarians have this space to spend time with Mary in prayer.”
The gift directly strengthens the Seminary’s endowment, ensuring long-term financial stability and continued excellence in priestly formation.
Father T. Christopher Redcay, Rector of Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, expressed his gratitude, saying, “We are deeply grateful for this extraordinary act of generosity. Endowment support is essential for the future of Saint Charles, allowing us to sustain our mission, provide for our seminarians, and preserve the spiritual and educational excellence that has defined this institution for generations. This gift not only enhances our campus but also secures the Seminary’s ability to serve the Church well into the future.”
