Pope Leo XIV has appointed Dr. Francesco C. Cesareo, Adjunct Professor at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary and President Emeritus of Assumption University and distinguished historian, as a member of the Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences, a Vatican body dedicated to promoting historical scholarship, particularly Church history, and fostering collaboration among scholars and institutions worldwide.
Dr. Cesareo said the appointment came as a complete surprise and represents both a profound honor and the culmination of a lifetime dedicated to scholarship, Catholic higher education, and service to the Church.
“For me, this appointment represents the culmination and recognition of my contributions both to the discipline of History as a teacher-scholar and to the mission of the various Catholic institutions where I served as a faculty member and administrator over the last forty years,” said Dr. Cesareo. “This appointment aligns closely with my scholarly interests, which focus on the intersection of the mission of the Catholic Church in the world and the historical events in which the Church finds herself.”
The Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences promotes the study of history, especially Church history, while encouraging international cooperation among Catholic and secular academic institutions. The Committee serves as a cultural bridge between the Church and the scholarly community, supports the pursuit of objective historical truth, and fosters dialogue with contemporary society. Its work includes advocating for the proper use of the Holy See’s archival heritage and facilitating scholarly access to the Vatican’s extensive historical records and collections.
Reflecting on his appointment, Dr. Cesareo expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in him by Pope Leo XIV and emphasized the vocational nature of his work throughout his career.
“I am humbled by the confidence of the Holy Father in appointing me to this Committee,” he said. “My entire career has been driven by a sense of vocation in service to the mission of the institutions where I worked as either a faculty member or administrator, the students I taught, and to the Church and her educational mission. It is my hope that as I undertake this responsibility, I will contribute to the discipline of History by fostering its importance, that my students will benefit from the insights I will gain through this work, and that I will serve the Church through the study of her engagement with the world in the midst of the historical context in which the Church lives and preaches the Gospel.”
In addition to his extensive career in higher education, Dr. Cesareo served as a consultant to the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, assisting in the development of its strategic plan. He is also a Senior Consultant with Hyatt-Fennell Executive Search and currently serves as an adjunct faculty member in History at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary and Villanova University.

A respected leader in Catholic education and public service, Dr. Cesareo has served as a Commissioner for the New England Commission of Higher Education and currently chairs the Sister Thea Bowman Black Catholic Education Foundation, which supports access to Catholic higher education for underserved African American students. His community and ecclesial service includes membership on numerous boards and advisory bodies. He also served as Chair of the National Review Board of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
