John Cardinal Foley Award

Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary sponsors an annual award named for John Cardinal Foley, the former President of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications.

The recipient of the Award for Excellence is nominated by the Advisory Committee of the John Cardinal Foley Chair and selected by the Archbishop of Philadelphia.

Description

The Foley Award seeks to recognize the excellence of a communications professional who works in any of the realms of mass media:

  • journalism … in print, radio, television, or social media
  • publications … in books or journals
  • productions … on stage or screen
  • oral communications … by way of homiletics or teaching (where that work is available online).

Special consideration is given to nominees whose work aligns with the theme of World Communications Day.

Foley Award winners will receive:

  • free admission to the award reception/presentation at the symposium for eight (8) guests
  • a donation of $1,000 in the recipient’s name to a charity of the recipient’s choice
  • a commemorative keepsake noting the recipient’s accomplishment.

The Award winner is invited to participate in a public discussion of the papal Message for the World Communications Day and to offer brief remarks following the award presentation.

Nominations for this award may be made by anyone by contacting the John Cardinal Foley Chair (FoleyChair@scs.edu).

Selection of the award winner is proposed by consensus of the Advisory Committee of the John Cardinal Foley Chair and finalized by the Archbishop of Philadelphia.

Awards are presented at the annual Symposium in celebration of World Communications Day.
